Blue Crabs Sign Vasquez and Oliveros

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have signed pitchers Virgil Vasquez and Rayner Oliveros for the 2012 season.

Virgil Vasquez returns for his second season with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Vasquez was a 7th round (190th overall) selection by the Detroit Tigers in 2003 MLB Amateur Draft.  He played five seasons in the Tiger Organization. His best season came in 2007, when he was 12-5 with a 3.48 ERA for Triple-A Toledo. During the middle of the 2007 season  he was called up to the major leagues and pitched in 5 games for the Tigers. In 2009, Vasquez made it back to major leagues, this time with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was 2-5 with a 5.84 ERA for the Pirates that season. After a season in the Tampa Bay Rays organization in 2010, Vasquez signed with the Blue Crabs for 2011. He posted a 8-6 record with a 4.25 ERA in 139.2 innings that season. Vasquez was also named MVP of the 2011-12 Australian Baseball League Championship series after throwing a complete game, allowing only 1 run on 5 hits.

Rayner Oliveros signed as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Royals in 2005. He pitched three seasons in the Royals organization before joining the Tampa Bay Rays organization in 2009. Olieveros was promoted to Triple-A  Durham in 2009, the highest level of his career. Last season, he was 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA in 33.1innings for the Quebec Capitales in the Can-Am League.
