Blue Crabs Add Reichert And Garcia

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announced on Wednesday that they have signed right-handed pitcher Dan Reichert and infielder Travis Garcia for the 2012 season.

Dan Reichert was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 1st round (7th overall) of the 1997 MLB Amauter Draft. He pitched five seasons in the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays from 1999-2003, and has 21 career major league wins. This will be his fifth season in the Atlantic League and third with the Blue Crabs. In 2010, he was 18-9 with a 3.95 ERA for the Southern Maryland. Last season, Reichert pitched in Taiwan.

Travis Garcia was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 21st round (619th overall) of the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft out of Iona College. He played two seasons in the Mets organization before joining Ohio Valley Redcoats of Frontier League in 2005. He stayed in the Frontier League for 2006, 2007 and 2008 with the Chillicothe Paints. After the 2008 Frontier League season was over, Garcia joined Southern Maryland and hit .306 with 3 home runs and 20 RBI in 19 games. This will be Garcia's fifth season with the Blue Crabs. Last season, he started the season with the Blue Crabs but was signed by the Saltillo Sarape Makers of the Mexican League at the end of May. He returned to the Blue Crabs in August and played a major part on them making the Liberty Division playoffs. Overall, he hit .305 with 18 home runs with 57 RBI in 57 games for the Crabs.

Two more solid signings by Patrick Obsorn and Blue Crabs.

Reichert didn't pitch for the Blue Crabs last season, but was their ace from 2009 to 2010, averaging 16 wins a season. He'll most likely be their number one or two starter entering the 2012 season.  He also provides veteran leadership to their rotation.

Travis Garcia will add some major pop in the Blue Crab lineup.  Last season, he had 29 home runs between Satillo and Southern Maryland.
