Patriots Sign Bynum, Rundgren and Santangelo

The Somerset Patriots have signed infielders Freddie Bynum and Rex Rundgren, as well as catcher Lou Santangelo for the 2012 season.

Freddie Bynum was originally drafted by the by Oakland A's in the 2nd round (60th overall) of the 2000 MLB Amateur Draft. He played in a 188 major league games with the Oakland A's, Chicago Cubs, and Baltimore Orioles from 2005 to 2008. He has a career .234 batting average with 6 home runs, 32 RBI and 18 stolen bases in his big leagues. After spending the 2010 season in the Japan Pacific League he returned to the United States and played for the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A affiliate Memphis in  2011.


Rex Rundgren was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 11th round (332nd overall) of the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft. He played seven seasons in the Florida Marlins organization and was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque in 2006, the highest level of his career. Rundgren played for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas in 2008 and the Rockies Double-A affiliate Tulsa in 2009. In 2010, he signed with the Maui Strong Warriors in the Golden League, and hit .280 with 2 home runs, and 29 RBI in 75 games. Last season he split time between Edmonton and Lake County in the North American League.

Lou Santangelo was selected by the Houston Astros in the 4th round (124th overall) of the 2004 MLB Amateur Draft out of Clemson University. He played nine seasons in the Astros organization, advancing to Triple-A three times in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Last season he hit .346 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI for Edmonton in the North American League.

Three solid signings by Somerset on Wednesday. Bynum adds some veteran leadership to the club and also more speed to their batting order. He can also play any where in the field. Rundgren is a solid fielder, while Santangelo will add some pop to the Patriots lineup.
