Patriots Sign Three Pitchers

The Somerset Patriots have signed pitchers Anthony Claggett, Ricky Brooks, and James Baker for the 2012 season. Baker was acquired by the Patriots from the Gary SouthShore Railcats of the American Association for cash considerations.

Anthony Claggett was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 11th round (330th overall) of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of California-Riverside. In 2006, he posted a 7-2 record with 14 saves and a 0.91 ERA for West Michigan White Caps(A). Claggett played two seasons in the Tigers organization before he was traded to the New York Yankees in November of 2006, as part of the Gary Sheffield trade. After two successful seasons in the Yankees minor league system, Claggett was called up to the major leagues in April of 2009. He pitched in two games for the Yankees that season. Claggett was picked up by the Pittsburgh Pirates later that season and pitched in one game for them in the big leagues. He split time between the Pirates Double-A affiliate Altoona and their Triple-A affiliate Indianapolis last season.

Ricky Brooks was drafted in the 3rd round (95th overall) of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft out of East Carolina University. He pitched six seasons in the White Sox organization before joining the Mets organization last year. He has a career 22-37 record with a 4.41 ERA in 223 innings pitched.

James Baker has a career 17-14 record, with a 3.53 ERA in 247 innings pitched in the minor leagues. He spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Gary SouthShore Rail Cats of American Association. Last season, he was 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA in 49 innings for the Railcats.
